  • 59% of organizations were victims of a ransomware attack between January and February 2024
  • 75 ransomware groups were active in 2024 
Cost of attacks
  • The average ransom payment in Q3 2024 was $479,237 
  • Ransom bills have increased fivefold in the last 12 months

Targets of attacks 

  • Commercial sectors were the top targets (legal, chemical and manufacturing, healthcare)
  • Healthcare and emergency services were targeted more in the first six months of 2024
  • Construction was the most targeted sector in Q3 2024

  1. 32% of attacks started with an unpatched vulnerability
  2. Credential compromise was the second-most common cause of successful ransomware attacks
  3. Malicious email ranked third

Extortion tactics 

  • Ransomware attackers have begun using more aggressive extortion tactics, such as double and triple extortion – a type of ransomware attack where a cybercriminal extorts their victim multiple times, namely by encrypting data, exfiltrating data to expose and threatening a third attack vector.
