Ask an IT Expert: Real Answers from Luis Nieto

After 30+ years in this business, I’ve noticed something—most companies don’t struggle with technology because it’s too complex.

They struggle because they’re not getting clear, honest answers.

Every week, I sit down with business owners across Houston—oil & gas, legal, manufacturing, and professional services—and the questions are usually the same:

  • Are we spending too much on IT?
  • Are we actually secure?
  • Do we need a full IT provider, or just support when things break?

So instead of giving you generic answers, I wanted to share how I actually respond in those conversations.

How much should a business spend on IT?

This is one of the first questions I get—and the honest answer is: it depends.

Most businesses fall somewhere in the 3% to 7% of revenue range, but that number can be misleading if you don’t look at what you’re getting for it.

What I tell clients is this:

  • If you’re spending too little, you’re probably taking on risk
  • If you’re spending too much, you’re likely paying for things you don’t need

What matters is alignment. Your IT spending should support your business goals—not just keep the lights on.

How do I know if my business is actually secure?

Most companies think they’re secure.

But when we dig in, there are usually gaps.

The basics I look for right away:

  • Multi-factor authentication across systems
  • Verified, tested backups
  • Endpoint protection and monitoring
  • Employee awareness (this is a big one)

If even one of those is missing, you’re more exposed than you think.

Security isn’t about buying tools—it’s about having a plan and making sure it’s actually working.

Do I need Managed IT Services, or just support when something breaks?

I’ve worked with both models for years.

Break-fix support works… until it doesn’t.

The problem is, it’s reactive. You’re waiting for downtime, issues, or lost productivity before taking action.

Managed IT flips that model:

  • Proactive monitoring
  • Predictable costs
  • Fewer surprises

If your business is growing, reactive IT will eventually slow you down.

Why does IT feel so expensive?

Because in a lot of cases—it is.

But not for the reasons most people think.

What we usually find:

  • Multiple tools doing the same thing
  • Old vendor contracts that haven’t been reviewed
  • Services that made sense years ago, but not today

When we do a proper review, there’s almost always an opportunity to reduce costs and improve performance.

What should a good IT strategy actually look like?

This is where most businesses are missing the mark.

A good IT strategy should include:

  • A clear understanding of your current environment
  • A prioritized list of improvements
  • A roadmap tied to your business goals
  • Budget alignment

If you don’t have those things, you’re not really managing IT—you’re reacting to it.

Where Most Businesses Get Stuck?

The biggest challenge I see isn’t awareness—it’s execution.

Business owners know something needs to change, but they don’t always have:

  • The time
  • The internal resources
  • Or a clear plan

That’s where we come in.

Some companies start with consulting to get clarity. Others move into ongoing support through our Managed IT Services. And many need to strengthen their security as part of that process.
